How to Make Your Own Essential Oil at Home – For Beginners

Make Your Own Essential Oils

Essential oils are known to contain the aroma or essence of a plant. While they have been used in cosmetics, incense, and perfumes for years, aromatherapy has rejuvenated people’s interest in essential oils. They are believed to enhance more positive moods and promote calm based on smell.
This is the main reason why many individuals want to make oils from their own homes. Making essential oils at home is possible, and you will discover that it can help you save some money. However, you should be ready for a high initial money outlay since making the oil at home will involve a distillation process.
It means that you will have to purchase or build your own still. Currently, there are three steam distillation methods that you can use to make your own essential oils. They include:
Steam: Place plant materials in a container. Push steam through the plant materials. Collect the steam and separate the oils from the water.

Water and Steam: Put plant materials in a container. Both boiling water and steam are carefully pushed through the materials. Collect the steam and then separate the essential oils from the water.

Apart from distillation, you can also use the cold-pressed or expression method to extract essential oils from citrus fruit. In this method, the citrus fruit rinds are mechanically pressed to release the oils. However, expressed oils aren’t technically pure essential oils.
When it comes to extraction, the hexane solvent is used to extract the major components and make a concrete mixture of essential oils, waxes, resins, and other plant materials. A second solvent like ethyl alcohol is then used to separate them from the mixture to make an absolute.
The alcohol components are then removed through distillation, creating the essential oils. Note that absolutes aren’t essential oils, they are essences.

Start with This Traditional Oil Infusion Process

If you want to make the oils for the first time, it is advisable, to begin with, a traditional infusion process. This process will provide you with excellent fragrant results, although the quality will not be the same as that of distilled essential oils.
To make high-quality infusions, you must choose the right materials. Use pale-colored oils that have a mild scent that will not overpower the herbs, spices, or flowers that you are planning to use. Jojoba, olive, almond, canola, or safflower can work excellently.

Choosing Herbs for an Oil Infusion

When making your essential oils at home, you can use any recommended garden herbs. You should use the flowers and leaves, but avoid branches or stems. Using the leaves, be sure to chop them before adding them to your oils. The most popular herbs include rosemary, lavender, thyme, lemon balm, and peppermint.

Choosing Spices

The most popular spices that you can find in essential oils are aromatic. Cinnamon, cumin, cloves, nutmeg, and coriander are the most popular spices. Before using, crush them down using a mortar and pestle to allow them to release their aromas.

Choosing Flowers

Most homemade essential oils contain scented flowers. You can either use one or several flowers in your oils. Use the petals only, since they have high amounts of the fragrance you are looking for. You should cut the flowers while they’re not completely opened and remember to use the petals only. Many fragrant flowers, including frangipani, roses, carnations, lavender, hyacinth, marigolds, and violets, are suitable for making essential oils.

Basic Rose Oil Infusion

You can create your own infusions from a rose flower. Just follow the simple steps:
1. Obtain 1/4 cup of rose petals.
2. Place your petals in a zip-lock bag and seal it. Tap the petals gently using a wooden mallet.
3. Place the petals in a glass jar and add 1/2 cup of your base oil over them. Then seal your jar and shake it several times to make a mixture. Leave the mixture aside overnight.
4. Once the second batch of the petals has been discarded, test the aroma.
5. When you notice that the fragrance is strong enough, strain your oil into a dark glass jar and then seal it tightly. Finally, store the jar away from sunlight until the time you need to use it.

Sensual Massage Aromatherapy Oil Infusion

For this type of infusion, you’ll need about 1/4 cup of mixed lavender flower, grated vanilla beans, and jasmine flower. Here is the procedure:
1. Place 1/4 cup of lavender flowers, grated vanilla bean, and jasmine flowers into a zip-lock bag and then tap them lightly using a wooden mallet to help release the fragrances.
2. Put the flowers into a glass container and add one cup of virgin oil. Seal the container and shake it excellently.
3. Leave your oil aside for two days for the mixture to steep.
4. After two days, strain your oil and get rid of flowers. Place it into a dark glass jar and then store it in a cool and dark place.
You’ll notice that the aroma of your essential oil is quite subtle. However, it can become more pronounced if you heat it slightly using your skin warmth.

The Quality Will Suffer if You Choose to Make Your Own Essential Oils

While you can make your own essential oils at home, the quality will suffer. This is because you will use the distillation process to extract the oils from plants. Distillation is an art, so the temperature and pressure levels need to be well-monitored to avoid destroying the value of the essential oils. Since you do not have the right tools to monitor and maintain the required temperature and pressure levels, you will end up with a low-quality product.
Apart from making low-quality essential oils, you will also waste a lot of time and resources preparing them. So it is actually cheaper in both resources and time to buy them than to make your own. Making them can prove to be expensive since you will need a lot of plant materials to make enough oil.

We hope that the information in this article was helpful, and you can now make your own infusions and essential oils at home without any problems.
